Must-haves for Autumn/Fall PRIMARK Edition!

Must-haves for Autumn/Fall +Primark  Edition!

You know and I know that the old “I’ll just pop in for socks” excuse never works, we go in for socks and somehow get transported to another universe where the “ooh sure it’s only €4!” takes over and it’s all downhill from there, right? Ten minutes turns in to forty five, and you forget the socks and come out with a whole new bedroom ensemble, and a new pair of boots (but still no socks for the boots!) and three pairs of jeggings and make-up in two different shades because sure it was only four euro lads, and you might need both!

Yeah, me too.

If we stop kidding ourselves and decide to go for it shame-free here are just a few of my must-haves for the new season at PRIMARK/PENNYS (depending on which side of the border you fall).

Starting off with the bane of our lives when September rolls around, the yearly struggle of finding the right Winter Coat ™.

The waterfall effect duster coat comes in two shades, black and dusk pink, perfect for the milder Autumn weather, pre-winter - over a light jumper and jeans, or a dress and tights. Next up the the classic belted mac with a wide collar in a knotted grey and white shade, I absolutely need this coat in my life because it looks so cosy and comfortable, and such an easy to wear piece for the milder months and easily transitioned right in to winter. NEED!

Anyone that's been following my blog for a time knows I have a bit of a scarf obsession, and infinity scarves are the bomb for me. I've lost count at this stage how many I have, and yet I can't help myself! Do you see where the 'they're just five euro' mentality comes in now?

Mmmhm there it is.

But aren't these two adorable? Loving the waffle textured beige and the deeper berry toned scarf, both perfect with the other items shown too as a mix and match. Teaming the berry toned one over the 3/4 sleeve top and the cute stone washed denim jeggings + the duster jacket? It's a look I'm not mad at for sure! The New York themed hoodie made the cut simply because it's one of my best memories of this past year, and it's simple, and over-sized is key for a lazy weekend look. This, some dark skinny jeans, and my +adidas  All Stars? A win for chic comfort.

If winter coats aren't your thing yet I spotted a gorge fleece lined cropped textured jacket with a slight waterfall effected neckline that is the perfect every-day wearable jacket in my opinion, stylish but simple, and yet bang up to date trend wise too, and a complete steal for £25!

Honourable mention, because again, anyone that knows me knows that Housewares and Make-up are my two favourite things in life, and if you ever lose me in a department store (which, happens more often than you think I'm only 5'0!) these are the two places I will probably be.  So tiny mention for the +Primark online +Primark home items, a few key pieces for me for A/W 2016 are
as always a good blanket, for snuggling up to on the sofa, or for that extra insulation at bed time, teamed with the their long-burning candle range, this one is a favourite of mine; invoking memories of summer on those thundery nights to come with their Sea Salt & Lavender scent.

Ps. It's always important to support your local girl gang, and look stylish as hell while raising hell, so why not do both with that cute re-useable bottle/straw combo!

Back to Blonde & Thursday Faves!

Happy almost Weekend everyone! I hope the last week in Jan has been going good! It's been all go here at EIC! I'm in the middle of planning a wedding with one of my oldest friends, and I honestly never knew how much WORK it was for one day! Insane! Glad I'm not the bride just yet! ;)

#NewHair! I decided this week to take the plunge and go back to blonde again. It's been over three years since I've been this bright and I have to say, I love it! Even though it's that much more difficult to maintain, and I was rocking the dip-dye and then the baylayage look for some time, I was feeling brave and wanted to be brighter! Have you taken the hair plunge lately? If so how did it turn out for YOU?!  A huge thank you to CM Hair for her work on my do!!

#Longhair kinda DO care :D xo

Thursday Faves!!

Two trusted favourites and some newbies for this week in details. I'm never far from my +BourjoisFrance  foundation - one of my all time holy grail products with the Healthy Mix foundation. And my go-to scent recently  from +Juicy Couture  that just gives that fresh spring time smell that is just what is needed for the still-too-dreary Jan days!

The newbies are in the form of the +MAKE UP FOR EVER   Artist plexi-gloss in 202. I love this for shine and texture but there is a slight smell that reminds me of petrol and that's really not nice at all. But the form of the gloss makes up for the scents, but only just.   The two skincare/makeup items are my new +Lancome USA  Hydra-Zen eye cream and the +Clarins  Rouge Eclat in No.13 Woodrose, a really soft, wearable dusky rose that is perfect for every day wear without appearing over done.

Until next time,

A Few Festive Faves!

The tree is up, the fire is keeping us toasty, all the lights are twinkling and the angelic little decoration rests atop the tree. And you may or may not have had the Kelly Clarkson Christmas album on repeat for days ...  Lovely, right? So lovely. But that's not all there is to it, there's also people - lots and lots of them if you're like me that require gifts for the festive 'everyone you know and a few you don't comes to visit' period.

If like me 2014 was a bit of a roller-coaster, it's a great opportunity to push yourself into the spirit of things around you and attempt to see the year out on a more positive note. And what a better way of doing that than gifting and stocking filling for the ones you love, the ones that have seen you through the previous 12months with some of the cutest items out there?

First up is an adorable site I found earlier in the year on the hunt for a new phone case - +Society6 offers the most creative designs from Geek to Chic in Women's, Men's, Home &Accessories. Shops and artists from all over the world contribute and let me tell you, I've lost an hour or two there browsing for unique home accessories or some sweet and environmentally friendly shopping totes!
Today they have a fab deal on their totes including $5 off AND free worldwide shipping, so get on that! I may or may not have sneaked a little tote as a treat for myself.

Oops?

Cute though, right?

Speaking of phone covers, I've become a bit of a addict of late. I chop and change far too much but there are just so many, and they're all beautiful. I'm currently rocking the shiny shield from +Captain America: The Winter Soldier which is just a little bit geeky but rather bad-ass looking if I do say so myself. (A+ film as well, check it out, one of the best of 2014!)But for gifting I've chosen the sweet and chic case from +kate spade new york via couture.zappos.com which is just beautiful and something I wouldn't mind finding in my stocking come Christmas morning!

On the cosmetics side of things, 2014 was another year of trial and error with makeup and skincare. But the fight continues, right? Two of my favourites this year (one based on packaging alone, because I am a magpie apparently) is the forever fave of +Benefit Cosmetics - Everything they do somehow becomes a favourite, and as much as I love a dupe every now and then I find it hard to give up my Beneobsession for anything. A great stocking filler I found is their Sugarlicious Deliciously nude…lip & cheek kit £25.50. Perfect for the fashionista among your ranks (or you know, a gift to yourself because hey, why not?) who wants to try out the mini versions of timeless classics such as their -
  • Benetint rose-tinted lip & cheek stain
  • High beam luminescent complexion enhancer
  • Sugarbomb "sugar rush flush" face powder
  • Ultra plush sugarbomb lip gloss
The second one was all +Agent Carter's fault or more so Hayley Atwell and her twittering for introducing me to the +Besame Cosmetics that they use for character and for the new show coming in January. The 40s look in makeup has always been a favourite of mine, and her look is just so flawlessly done - and we share a skintone and hair colouring so it's always good to know what might work on me from little details like that. The Besame cosmetics are so unique, they are packaged as if they came straight from the 40s and 50s, and their quality is simply stunning. On my wishlist is the 40s perfection that is the Red Velvet lippy! But check out their authentic style of mascaras and press powders. Perfect for that little something different that no one else is sure to have thought of!

The splurge item on the list is of course the flawless @JoMaloneLondon. For obvious reasons  really - her scents are just amazing and long lasting, and the candles - while expensive are a real treat and a tiny luxury that is sure to be cherished!

Everyone, man woman or child in my opinion should have a cashmere scarf in their wardrobe. Not only are they incredibly soft, cosy and long lasting, but chances are they're super stylish as well. The one I chose for the list comes from +Nasty Gal in a nude/pink check pattern that is sure to compliment just about every coat/jacket combo and will surely keep you looking put together and polished even when there is no time for effort at all! Plus, did I mention softer than a kitten? Yes please.

The two final items are ones I have already and love - the Ugly Christmas Jumper has become somewhat of a thing this past few years, and love them or loathe them, they are EVERYWHERE. I was partial to this red one from +boohoo.com with a quote from a childhood classic Home Alone. It's cute without being too in your face, or so I tell myself. Either way it works out great for that Ugly Christmas Jumper 'night out' that everyone and their mother seems to be doing now too.

Clubbing in a jumper, is this 1990? Apparently!

And last but not least, a little sweet Karma. Via +Amazon.com these simple but elegant pieces go with every outfit, casual to formal they are delicate and beautiful and averaging around €30+ a gift that's sure to impress!

(Olaf included only if you sit to watch Frozen for the nine millionth time, sorry folks!)

Whatever you're getting up to this Holiday season I hope you do it happily, safely and full of love.

Till next time!

Fall/Winter Wardrobe Must-Haves Part 1

Very Cranberry - Essie!

Cranberry Goodness!

More than just a sauce for that Thanksgiving or Christmas turkey, the shade of the 2014/15 winter season is one that I personally can’t get enough of! Crowding the catwalks at Paris and Milan Fashion Week, we can see that it’s not a trend we’re going to escape easily. Personally, I love autumn /winter more so than spring/summer because I get to embrace my two fashion loves – dark colours and scarves without judgement! (But really, I live in Ireland I could rock the dark all year around and it would be fine, it rains every other day anyway!) This year I’m all about the plums, cranberries and uber rich jewel tones!

From scarves and coats to jumpsuits, nails and skirts it's clear I'm not the only one loving this trend!

Over sized scarf from ACNE

To +Primark online and +ASOS the rich hues are everywhere for every shape, size, and mindset!

If you’re too shy to go full on with your clothes then the safer bet lies within your accessories and makeup choices.Whether it’s a deep royal purple eye, a flashy emerald green, or bold ruby lips, the options to be bold in winter is always there. The days are darker, so shall be our lips! Right? Eh, well, maybe

For an everyday look, depending on your workplace, the bold makeup looks above might not be the best of ideas – I mean unless funny looks and ‘ooh that one… where does she think she’s at!’ conversations are your thing, in that case, fire away! But, on the off chance that it’s a tad more conservative, the accessory option is always a good one.

Keeping it simple like Scarlett J here, is an acceptable middle ground.

For a bolder lip look - keep the eyes and cheeks fresh but focus on a dark berry or plum shade - Mac Lush Life is just one perfect example!

Strong eyes but barely there lips and cheeks can work easily without becoming too-much and overpowering your face.

Pack on the gold shimmer on top of a black matt base for this sultry glam look!
You can keep the face neutral all for one area, lips or eyes. In Scarlett's case she's chosen a pretty mauve shadow, with a barely there cheek and pinky fresh lip. Compared with the model to the left, choosing a packed on gold shimmer against a black matted down look with a nude pink lip to pair things down making the eyes the focus of the look. The options and looks are endless, and isn't that just how we like it?

Till next time,

Laura

Makeup Shake Up!

Hi guys! How is March treating you so far? Has there been any March Madness you'd like to share? Or has it been a calm but cold transition into 'Spring'? I've been a little MIA from here but you can always find me on Twitter / Instagram or Tumblr if you need to get in touch!

I have been on a bit of a journey this past month or so, I've been helping a few makeup newbies take their first tentative steps into the world of 'doing yourself up', as I liked to call it.

First up let's talk about Lindsay, a great girl in her 20's from the Mid-West in the United States. She and I have been blog buds for some time now, and once I learned that she never really had experimented with makeup or skincare in the past (She's now in her early 20s!) I was itching to help her discover this side of things. It took a little gentle convincing (or, you know, firm but loving pushes in the right direction, either or...) to get her to open up to the idea that she could wear makeup and look amazing, it could feel natural and not like a mask of madness on her skin, and it could make her feel more confident. We talked over a lot of her fears too which I think are beyond important, when first starting to experiment with anything you're unsure of.

"But what if I look like a drag queen" - says She.
"Trust me you won't!" - says I.
"Are you sure ?!" - says She.
" I swear, we'll teach you how to blend!" - says I.

We started off with basic skincare, cleanse right, and moisturise day and night - now is the time to start investing in your skin so twenty years from now your skin won't look like it's fifty years from now. I suggested something light and natural, and she settled on +Aveeno Cetaphil skincare to start with. We then moved on to makeup, I wanted her to experiment at first, to see if it felt like something she'd want to continue, so we decided to go with cheap & cheerful - just in case she never used them more than once, I was conscious of a budget for beginning.

I decided to try a middle of the road - budget wise - Foundation. For me the key elements to a good face of makeup start with the moisturiser, or primer, and the foundation. Everything else can be as budget friendly as you like, depending on how you use them. For this I suggested my favourite foundation - the holy grail of high-street makeup - +BourjoisUK  Healthy Mix. However, we discovered that this wasn't widely available in the states, and if it was, it was for almost triple the price that we pay for it here in Ireland/ Uk. So, that was a no go. The next stop for us was +Boots UK  and their US site. Here we settled on their own brand No.7 for foundation, ordering it in the palest shade they had, because like me and many of us Caspers, Linds is a pale girl. So, without me being there in person to swatch for her, I sent in her right direction, crossed my fingers and hoped for the best come delivery day.

Then came tools, and the only ones I could suggest to her in good conscious was the +realtechniques core collection to start. I've been a massive fan of the +Sam Chapman creations for ages now, and only seemed right to start her off with the best - and the best value for money too - because as hard as it was to rein me in, budget, budget, budget!!

Next up we hit +e.l.f. Cosmetics for just about everything we could think of, and well, she went a liiitttle crazy!

And it was amazing.

I was attempting to welcome her gently, thinking, hey there's a half price sale, maybe she'll see one or two things she'll like. Nope, it turned out she was a natural and demanded almost one of everything they had on offer! I was doing my Chandler happy dance, and was so excited for her to dive in and have a play around with all this stuff!  It sounds strange, I suppose but I knew that she would benefit so much from it all. Not just from the superficial fun aspect of it all, but from the other side of the coin too.

The side that most people can relate too.

That, no matter how beautiful you are naturally - and let's face it, when we're being objective, we've all got something naturally beautiful about us - but when you get that new product that enhances your already epic lashes or compliments your freckles or makes your amazing eyes stand out just a little bit more. There's a moment of empowerment that comes with that, something that puts that extra little pep in your step.

So my excitement and pride was pushed aside as we waited for her to receive all her goodies, and when she did, she was just as excited to try things out. Lindsay started off slowly, spending time blending and perfecting her foundation *which was a perfect match!* and moved on from there. She most importantly was having fun with her new adventure, and I was happy she was happy. I had in a weird, roundabout way helped a person thousands of miles away, even in a small way, it was an amazing feeling of accomplishment - even with something as 'silly' as makeup.

I'm not a 'guru' or an 'expert' or even someone who gets it right every time. I'm not the girl that wears ten pounds of slap, fake tan and hair extensions every day, but I'd never judge those who are! If I had the time or notion to do this everyday, I probably would, because whatever floats your boat, right?

I think that starting to feel comfortable with yourself and within yourself starts with finding even the littlest of ways to make yourself feel like your best self. If it's going for a run, or going window shopping or starting a new diet, or buying that new lippy, whatever it is that makes you feel like the best you, I say go for it!

The Best of 2013 BBLOG Edition!

Hi all! I hope you all had an amazing Christmas and a great start to the New Year. 2013 was a complicated year for me (and I’m sure for many of you as well!) and I can’t lie I’m glad to see the back of it if I’m honest.

A little catch up as to why my blog has been so empty as of late, not so much excuses more legit reasons as to why I felt too burnt out by life to actually get excited about writing for myself again. I hope that 2014 changes that, starting now!

(Mini Mexican Wave!)

The year started off promising with a great internship that really helped me grow and develop my skills and it led to meeting some fab people and great opportunities. One of which was a ‘real’ job in a new somewhat unfamiliar industry, that seemed like a good idea at the time! Interspersed between the good there is also some of the bad, most notably, Cancer.

Yeah, that horrific little blighter that seems to cast a shadow on too many families lately. I had a double whammy as both my grandfather and father were diagnosed around the same time (the same week actually, a week after I started the new job, awesome timing life…), and so, 2013 was a year of battles in more ways than one.  A lot of juggling was done, and a lot of lessons were learned both personally and professionally. 2013 taught me that I need to start trusting my gut more, when it comes to people I meet, be it friends or relationships, jobs, opportunities, and doing what’s right for me and not being so overly worried about what people are going to think of me.

Because I realised, people are going to judge you and talk about you no matter what you do, no matter what choice you make or let be made for you, and I think it’s about time we stop giving a damn!

To quote the fine wine (or is that full of wine?) that is Johnny Depp -

“Just keep moving forward and don't give a shit about what anybody thinks. Do what you have to do, for you.”

So on that note!

Let’s move forward with 2014, cuddle in from the battering wind and storms outside and revel in the
Best of…2013 #bblog edition!

First up with skincare, like most women I chop and change my routine depending on my skin needs or, being honest, if something new and shiny just takes my fancy and I have to try it. But this year I think I’m managed to keep things to a bare minimum starting with two of my favourite moisturisers starting with the cult fave - Clarins -Beauty Flash Balm.

Most people know of this if they haven’t tried it for themselves yet but if you haven’t I suggest you do as I think it’s fantastic for keeping dull winter skin bright and toned and it’s amazing just before makeup it really aids to its longevity and keeps your skin fantastically refreshed in the process! Win, Win!

In the same category is the high street find from Oilatum. Their Natural Face Cream is amazingly soft and easy on dry, dull skin and really helps eliminate any tightness that can be caused when you are prone to drier skin in the colder months. This I use all year around really, and mostly every day as it’s super light in texture too and lasts all day.

As far as facial cleansers go I have two: Burt’s Bees SoapBark & Chamomile Deep Cleansing Cream – really, really soft and gentle on the skin and removes the majority of any makeup or residue before you can go back in with a makeup cleanser to take off the rest. Purse friendly too as it’s in and around £10 I think.

The second is a cleanser that I have been somewhat obsessed by for some time now.

Pai Camellia & Rose Hydrating Cleansing Cream. This is a really great brand in my opinion and if you haven’t checked out their range you should get on that because it’s fab! This amazing cleansing cream is just love. It’s camellia and rose qualities are super gentle on the skin and is just bursting with all the things sensitive skin loves like  Omega 3 with Vitamins A, B & E as well. This purchase came with a exfoliating muslin cloth that allows you to gently remove the cleanser and everything it sweeps off your face in a skin friendly way that won’t cause too much harsh irritation.  If you don’t fancy the feel of the muslin in this instance any warm face cloth does the trick just fine, but I have to say I will be going back to the PAI brand in the future if this is any example of how great their line really is. This is definitely on the repurchase list for sure!

Ps. Side note but I’ve been singing the praises of Extra Virgin Coconut Oil forever and a day now, and it’s really my go-to for hair and skin SOS. For hair, especially hair that’s fine genetically and may be subjected to bleaching or dying and a lot of heated tools it works really well in restoring some of the life and moisturiser back into the follicles. You can get it from any good health food shop and it would be worth adding to the pamper routine if you’re looking for something new and skin friendly also!

Makeup faves I think I covered on here in these posts but feel free to go back and have a nosy! Featuring Bourjois, Origins, and Benefit can be found on the blog already!

For hair there have been two things I couldn’t live without this year and one is the trusted GHD range of hair straighteners. My last pair the originals lasted me SIX years, now if that isn’t an epic investment I don’t know what is. They gave out for the final time earlier this year and I just knew I wouldn’t last long without them so I treated myself to a pair of the Limited Edition Coloured GHD straightens. And they’re Piiink! A metallic hot purple-pink and it came with a GHD flat brush too, if you follow my instagram you'll have seen me fangirl over these when I got them recently. Needless to say I love them; they’re fantastic for straightening and curling so it’s an all in one with a million percent less hassle and less hair tools too. Love, love, love, and did I mention they’re pink!? :D

The next one was an impulse buy for me but it’s been a surprisingly great find all the same. The Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray, it’s a tiny miracle for fine haired girls like moi. Just spraying some of this into damp hair after a wash, blow drying and then adding some curl, it really helps I think. It adds ‘something’ without adding weight, which is key for me as I find some leave in products just sit in the hair and weigh me down, and with fine hair that’s really the last thing anyone needs! Bounce and texture with very little work. Definitely will be buying again!!

I narrowed it waaay down for obvious reasons, but I hope that you’re still with me either here, on Twitter or on Tumblr and if you’d like to follow me on my Instragram feel free to join the nonsense there too! What have your favourites been in 2013? Anything already making the list in 2014?!
